3rd Grade Literacy: What We’re Doing and What We’ve Accomplished October 2011

What we’ll accomplish

Increase the percentage of 3rd grade students reading at a 3rd grade reading level. Increase the civic achievement of youth in grades K-12.

Percentage of 3rd grade students reading at grade level as measured by mid-year benchmark reading levels.

Targets

Baseline mid-year 2010: 78%

  • 2011: 73%
  • 2012: 80%
  • 2013: 83%
  • 2014: 90%

  • 73% of 3rd grade students were reading at the 3rd grade reading level in January 2011.
  • Trained 6 DeKalb County educators to guide parents in DeKalb Reads, a two-part parent workshop series designed to help parents help their kindergarten children achieve grade-level learning.
What we’re doing to achieve our goals
  • 61 families of kindergarten students striving to achieve grade-level learning in the Garrett and DeKalb Central school districts are enrolled in DeKalb Reads.
  • Creating awareness around the contribution of high quality early care and learning programs to a child’s readiness for school.
