3rd Grade Literacy: What We’re Doing and What We’ve Accomplished October 2012

K-12Our vision

DeKalb County students attain outstanding performance as measured by academic, vocational, and civic achievement.

What we’ll accomplish

Increase the percentage of 3rd grade students reading at a 3rd grade reading level.

Increase the civic achievement of youth in grades K-12.

Data we’re using to measure progress

Percentage of 3rd grade students reading at grade level as measured by the I-READ 3, effective September 13, 2012. Prior to September 2012, Fountas & Pinnell benchmark reading levels were used.

Current status3rd grade Target

Team’s measure of accountability was changed from Fountas & Pinnell benchmark reading levels to the state’s Spring I-READ 3 assessment. I-READ 3 scores were found to align with other 3rd grade reading assessments, offer greater consistency, are easily accessible, and align with achievement information shared publicly.

What we’re doing to achieve our goals

Planning year 3 for KiPS (kindergarten prep school) in summer 2013. KiPS is a partnership of Butler Public Library and the DeKalb Eastern school district. KiPS enrollment in 2012 was 34 children (44 in 2011).

Garrett-Keyser-Butler and DeKalb Central school districts invited parents and guardians of 200 kindergarten students striving to reach grade level to parent literacy workshops conducted at Eckhart, Garrett and Waterloo libraries in October 2012. 43 families participated in 2012.

57 Kindergarten – 3rd grade students countywide are matched 1:1 with HOPE mentors.

270 1st – 5th grade students are enrolled in the YMCA’s Excel afterschool program in partnership with DeKalb Central school district (246 in October 2012).

Promoting other community programming focused on developing early literacy skills, such as Eckhart Public Library’s Begin IN Books for children and parents.
