Adult Lifelong learning - Why It Matters

Goal: DeKalb County adults participate in continual learning to improve themselves, their families and their community.

Why It Matters
  • We all benefit when DeKalb County adults are better educated, more literate, and personally fulfilled by careers and opportunities that contribute to a better life for all.
  • Employees most in demand in the U.S. have at least a 2-year degree (2011).
  • A parent's level of education is a major factor in determining whether a child achieves academic success; the children of low-skilled adults are also likely to bear the burden of their parents' low educaitonal attainment (CLASP, 2011).
  • No one can be economically secure unless all of us are.
DeKalb County Facts
  • 12% of DeKalb County residents do not have a high school diploma or a GED (American Community Survey, 2009).
  • DeKalb County demographics are changing. Poverty is increasing as manufacturing jobs are lost; the percentage of children living in poverty continues rising (2011).
  • Top jobs in northeast Indiana include network systems and data communications analysts, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers, construction laborers and registered nurses (2011).
Coordinating its work with the Early Childhood and Kindergarten – 12th Grade Education action teams, the Adult Lifelong Learning team is focused on adults achieving in two areas:
As a result of focusing on these two areas, DeKalb County residents can expect higher rates of employment, increased per capita income, greater success for children, increased voter participation and enhanced volunteerism and civic engagement.

All community members countywide interested in this stage are welcome to participate and get involved in the process. Contact us to get involved.
