Adult Lifelong learning - What We're Doing

Goal: DeKalb County adults participate in continual learning to improve themselves, their families and their community.

What We’re Doing
This team has identified two priorities for ensuring all DeKalb County adults have opportunities for personal and professional development.

Supporting adult career development.
A priority of the Adult Lifelong Learning action team is to promote DeKalb County adults continually advancing their learning to the next level in their careers with a focus on increasing the number of people completing occupational, career-based training programs.

Workplace literacy skills are a prerequisite to begin or advance any career. These workplace literacy skills include the abilities to process and locate information and apply simple math. To raise the level of basic workplace literacy skills of DeKalb County adults, we’ve gathered an inventory of the existing supports and opportunities for DeKalb County residents to learn these basic skills. With that knowledge, our team will map these supports and opportunities (pathways), then report and distribute the information countywide.

Progress is being measured using: DeKalb County (1) # of enrollees in adult education, # earning GEDs, # getting jobs, # transitioning to post-secondary education (source: Four County Vocational Cooperative); and DeKalb County levels of educational attainment (source: American Community Survey, estimated @ 3 years based on U.S. Census data).

Creating awareness around the opportunities for parent education in DeKalb County.
We’ve identified the existing supports and opportunities for parents to help their children thrive. With that knowledge, our team has developed a promotional brochure to share what those opportunities are in our county for enhancing parenting skills. Because many parents may not recognize their needs, marketing these opportunities is key along with embedding parenting training into other community programs.
