Early Childhood Education - What We're Doing

Goal: All children in DeKalb County enter kindergarten ready to learn.

What We’re Doing

  • Supporting Parents and Caregivers.
To be successful in school, children need a wide range of physical, social, emotional, language, and cognitive skills to thrive. They need pre-reading skills along with the ability to make and keep friends, develop positive relationships with adults, and feel a sense of opportunity and excitement for the world around them. Much of this responsibility falls upon parents. That’s why we defined what it means for a child to be ready to learn in kindergarten and developed a common kindergarten readiness screening tool to be used across DeKalb County. We recognize that schools also have a responsibility to be ready for the children.

  • Supporting Early Childhood Education.
Because children enrolled in center-based early childhood care and educational programs (including child care centers, nursery schools, preschool programs, Head Start, summer learning and pre-Kindergarten programs) are usually better prepared for kindergarten, we’re promoting high quality early learning opportunities for children ages 0 - 5.
