What We’ve Accomplished
  • Gained consensus around the long-term goal: DeKalb County students attain outstanding performance as measured by academic, career, and civic achievement (May 2009).
  • Developed a matrix (below) of academic, career, and civic achievement goals for different grade levels (June 2009).

  • Developed an academic goal of all third grade students reading at grade level before leaving third grade.
  • Afterschool intervention has now been blended with the EXCEL afterschool program, a partnership between the YMCA of DeKalb County and DeKalb Central schools (Fall 2010).
  • Developed a career achievement goal for 9th-12th grade students and are encouraging teachers to invite community professionals to make presentations in their classrooms and increasing the number of student internship and project-based learning opportunities available through collaboration between schools and businesses (September 2011).
  • Partnering with Allen County Education Partnership, six DeKalb County community members (retired teachers) were trained to work with parents to help parents help their children become readers and writers by 3rd grade (May 2011).
